<div>S Nazrul Islam, Chief of Development Research of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, is an eminent economist of Bangladesh. He received his PhD in economics from Harvard University and Masters in economics from Moscow State University. He also studied economics at Dhaka University.</div><div>During his long teaching career, Islam taught economics at Dhaka University, Harvard University, Emory University, Kyushu University, and St. Johns University. Through his research, he made his mark in several areas of economics, including the economics of growth, transition, development, and environment. He has published twenty books and numerous articles in reputed international journals.</div><div>In recent years, Islam devoted more of his research to issues of the environment, focusing on water development. He has developed a novel conceptual framework for discussing river policies and has put forward an alternative water development strategy. His recent books on environmental issues include Let the Delta Be a Delta (2016), Bangladesh Environment Movement (2018), and Rivers and Sustainable Development (2020).</div><div>Islam is the founder of Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN) and the initiator of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA). Through these organizations, he is striving to raise public awareness and bring about policy changes necessary for the protection of the environment and rivers.</div>
